Tony Pedro Oliva is a former Cuban professional baseball player, batter and coach who has played a full 15-year career in the Major League for the Minnesota Twins, from 1962 to 1976. After moving to the United States in 1961, Oliva played minor tournaments before becoming regular in major tournaments in 1964. Playing in baseball's "second deadball period", he was one of the game's best players and an All-Star during its first eight seasons. Oliva is the AHL Rookie of the Year 1964, the champion hit AL for three seasons, the successful AL point defender for five seasons and the Golden Gloves winner in one. After eight professional seasons, Oliva's career was hampered by a series of serious knee injuries, forcing him to become a designated player for his last four years in baseball.
